Watching Weather Balloons on Ham Radio

Watching Weather Balloons on Ham Radio

UC Berkeley’s Amateur Radio Club and the East Bay Amateur Radio Club in California launched a balloon with a tracking device Saturday, which allowed radio amateurs to see how far the balloon went, how high it went and how fast it was going. After launching the balloon on the UC Berkeley campus, the hobbyists followed it in their cars to where it landed near Sacramento. Balloons like this can be fun to track for amateur radio operators like myself, but they…

Half of Idaho in Flood Alerts

Half of Idaho in Flood Alerts

Take a look at the Weather Service’s website this morning and south Idaho is a sea of green with Flood Advisories and Warnings. The snow is melting and rain is falling and those two together are causing record flooding that has closed Interstate 86 between Burley and Pocatello. The Interstate has since reopened, but other highways are closed both in the Snake River Plain as well as in the mountains, where this warmer rainy weather is causing an avalanche threat….

In fact, 10 states will be completely colder that the high at Curiosity and another 18 states will have at least some part below that 28-degree high today. Including Hawaii! The data comes from an app on my phone called Sol, which takes data…

POST REQUEST: Salt Lake City Snow Forecast

In the comments in my last blog post, a family member of mine in the Salt Lake area lamented about not having snow. Instead of commenting something short, I decided to do a full blog post. I have good news and bad news. I’ll start with the bad news first: Bad News: Forecasted highs through the work week are high, Wednesday is even looking at a high near 53. That’s unfortunate if you like snow. Lows aren’t going to get…

Your way too early Christmas Forecast

Your way too early Christmas Forecast

I shamelessly admit that making a Christmas forecast right now is more of a crap shoot than anything, but I thought I might shed some light of the general idea that the Pacific Northwest is looking at here in two weeks. Before I start, though, take everything I say here with a grain of salt. Long-range Forecast Looking at data from the Climate Prediction Center, it looks like temperatures are going to get down right cold for the beginning of next week,…
